// PROJECT 06 SHADER DEVELOPMENT
Water Shader Development
Realistic and stylized water shaders created in Unreal Engine 5
// SHADERS SUMMARY
Water Shaders
One complete and advanced Water material shader with material instancing in mind. Categorized and exposed parameters for controlling stylized looks, scaling, animated rain ripples, wave speed and intensity etc. Easily create water materials in different styles.
Caustics Shader
Caustics Decal material with RGB splitting for projection. Exposed parameters with access to speed, intensity and scaling.
Glass With Fingerprints
Tri-planar glass material with fingerprints.
Carbonated Drinks
Drink material used in combination with the glass material. Simply create different liquid instance materials with necessary exposed parameters. Toggle for animated bubbles texture with speed.
ASCII Art Post Process Shader
Stylized ASCII Art inspired Post Process Shader.
// OVERVIEW SUMMARY
This project was part of our Shader Development course. We got to choose freely what softwares to work in and I went for mostly pure Unreal Engine 5 and some lighter texture editing in Photoshop and Substance Designer.
I wanted to create a multipurpose shader that is flexible for different scenarios yet easy to work with. Since there's a huge variety of water looks I wanted to explore that further.
For the showcase I built an outside pool environment.
// RESULT RETROSPECTIVE
While I realized it's difficult to create one shader to serve "all types of water", I managed to get a decent balance. Without deeper knowledge it lets artists create quite the range of different looks and behaviors through the exposed parameters, which I'm happy with.
If I had taken this project further, I'd like to add an underwater post process shader and also explore dynamic water physics with collision to further improve realism.
